Winter activities in Dalarna

In Sweden and Dalarna are good opportunities for a winter holiday. Dalarna has real winters with snow and ice. Winter activities like skiing and snowboarding are possible at a fairly low price.
In winter there are many opportunities for winter fun in the snow and on ice.
It is also possible to enjoy a swim in the swimming-paradise Aqua Nova in Borlänge or visit the Falu Copper Mine in Falun.


Dalarna has great ski resorts where you can go skiing and snowboarding and the prices of ski passes are much lower than in the Alps.
The ski areas are open from about mid-December until mid-April. The use of snow machines gives snow guarantee during this period.
For example, in the ski resort Romme Alpin, nearby Borlänge are 13 lifts and 33 slopes. Here you can ski perfectly in a cozy and relaxed atmosphere, without the usual hustle and bustle of the big resorts. There is plenty of challenge for the experienced skier and also offers many opportunities for the beginner.
The ski areas are also very suitable for children. Children under 8 years can ski for free if they are in company of an adult with a ski-pass. Children until the age of 14 must wear a helmet.

Cross-country skiing

There are a lot of possibilities for cross-country skiing in Dalarna, both short and long trips are possible on very good prepared tracks. There are also many illuminated trails (Swedish: Elljusspår) present. If the tracks are open depends on the quantity of snow. At some trails are snow machines.
For example, in Falun (Lugnet, Sörskog, Stångtjärn) and in Borlänge (Bergebo, Gyllbergen, Mellsta) offers excellent cross-country skiing on good prepared tracks.
The real challenge is the Vasaloppet, the largest annual cross-country ski event in Sweden. This competition goes over a distance of 90 km from Sälen to Mora. About 16,000 people are joining this and it’s a great happening for Sweden. Especially the very massive start is a whole show-piece.
Besides this are being organized all kind of other competitions for cross-country skiing in the week before the Vasaloppet, like the "Kortvasan". This is a competition of 30 km over a part of the Vasaloppet, from Oxberg to Mora. The "Öppet spårat" goes over the whole distance of 90 km and is specially for whom who are not a member of a sporting club.
For all these competitions you have to register and the number of participants is limited.

Ice skating

For those who like skating on natural ice, there is plenty of opportunity on the many lakes in Dalarna. Every winter it is possible to skate and usually from December until late March.
For those who like to make large and endless ice skating tours on nature ice Lake Runn, located between Falun and Borlänge, is an Eldorado. Here you can skate on swept tracks of different lengths (up to 50 km long) and suitable both for the beginner as for the experienced ice skater. It is a real skating paradise for the whole family and ideal for shorter and longer tours.
When you want to experience a winter festival with lots of action and many activities on ice then Runn Winter Week is recommended. This event is hold every year mid-February.
You can also rent Swedish skates, which are perfect for skating on natural ice. A hire package consists of a pair of skates, shoes, ice prickers and poles. You can click the skates under your shoes, like you do with cross-country skis. Swedish people usually are skating with poles.

Snowshoe walking

The beautiful hilly landscape of Dalarna offers many opportunities for snowshoe walking.
Walking with snowshoes is a great experience during the winter, walking through the snow and enjoy the fantastic winter landscape. You can walk to places you otherwise can't reach in the winter. It is very easy and suitable for whole the family, also for children. A snowshoe is a kind of racket which locks under your hiking boot.
At several locatons renting snowshoes and poles is possible. The only thing you need to have are high, sturdy and waterproof walking shoes.

Snowmobile driving

The expansive nature of Dalarna is perfect for making snowmobile tours through the beautiful winter landscape. This is a funny and exciting experience, crosses over lakes and open spaces and paths. Snowmobile safaris are organized at several locations. You need to wear warm clothing and a helmet is included in the rent.
